The third Black Friday Crit took place nov 24th. For the third straight year the race took place in Central Park! Meet up was at Naumburg Bandshell and race fee was $10 bucks! It was a chilly night which meant it would be even colder in the park. Registration started at 8:30pm with race start time set at 9:10pm. With everyone registered and the people in attendance picking spots to view the race it was time to line up.
As tradition goes gabe leads out everyone for a rolling start. As we come in from the warm up lap Gabe pulls off and the race begins! Andre is hot off the gun everyone is playing catch up now! This year the race was 12 laps so Dre deff tried to put a hurt on the field from the jump. Quickly during that first lap the race was determined for podium and honorable mention!
Playing cat and mouse for the first few laps Andre, Gio, Lalo, and I (Jason) were putting in a good effort. As the pace started to steady I felt this was my chance into the 5 lap to break from the group as Andre signals with his elbow that its my turn to take the lead of our peloton, I went. Head down legs burning I lit my match not taking one look back. If anyone was on my wheel they deserve it with the effort I just put. I take a peek under my left elbow no one.
7 laps later I come in crossing the finish line still a lone.
Jason 1st Lalo 2nd Gio 3rd

NSFL stands for Not So Friendly Laps a local park cycling series in NYC held by Corey Hilliard. Every thursday night for the last three weeks amateur cyclist gather to race in prospect park. This past thursday was a particularly gloomy and dark one, with rain looming over the city. Race time is at 9:20pm and guess who works till 9? Yup! Me (Buckets) lol.
Having to leave early from work, plus having to burn a few matches just to get there. I pull up at 9:10 barely enough time to catch a second wind. This is the first time I took the road bike Victor blessed me with to race in the series. It started to mist as we lined up to start the race. 3,2,1 we are off!
The first few laps of the race were pretty fast as it took some time for the rain to soak in the pavement. Having Egor dictating the early pace definitely put a hurt on the chase group. Gio and I were able to play cat and mouse with the field as I would attack from the back in full efforts to string out those who cant recover quickly. I waited for Egor to blow up again before I decided to go on a solo break with 5 to go.
Having Gio really helped! Gio has had an injury filled 2017 season but has shown the heart to keep pushing and staying focused to stay with his fitness. I was finally caught a lap after the break away as the peloton blew themselves up to catch me. Now being caught Gio gave me a heads up they were behind me on the hill. Shouts to Jesse and Egor for bridging a 30 sec gap. Gio told me he tried to hold them back as much as he could.
Now back in the group I try to recover for a lap. I sit back and let the group try to tire eachother out but again i see it’s only Egor trying to put life in the pack. Recovered, I decided to blow myself up for the final 3 laps. I relentlessly attack one after the other. Sprint, get caught, recover, and repeat! After about the 8th sprint with about two to go, I burn a super match and create a good distance between me and the pack. I take a look under my right elbow and noticed that the field is discombobulated and not responding, I keep my head down and fight through the lactic acid to keep the gap.
The final two laps were more about mental toughness. The whole time I am thinking are they going to bridge again, I did burn so many matches already. I reach the final climb and see that I am still solo and drop into my little chain ring. Finally seeing the finish line i was able to sit up and smile for the photos! Now time to see how Gio will finish.
Not to many seconds after I see Gio coming down the turn solo and scream 2nd place baby! I must say I was super impress for Gio to hold the field back when he could for me and still take second! C6Racing came to support and have fun and that is what we did! Who will take this weeks NSFL as its the series finally!! See you there!
It’s live ya’ll check it out:
